The decoration on this bowl is inspired by the paintings of David Teniers II (1610-1690) best known for his peasant scenes. The silversmith Edward Farrell (d.1850) was known for the same highly embossed work and the Foxes presumably acquired his moulds. The high relief scenes of drinking and merriment outside an Inn are typical of 17th century Dutch and Flemmish genre painting. The bowl measures 8.2" (21cm) from handle to handle and 3.9" (10cm) high to rim.
