One of a number of very attractive punch bowls awarded by Chester corporation to winning owner of Chester Races, an ordered from London Goldsmiths. Our punch bowl is of generous size stand 9.75 inches (24.7 centimetres ) high, Is 12 inches (30 centimetres) in diameter, and weighs 79 ounces (2957 grammes). In virtually mint condition, it is engraved with the arms of the city of Chester and the name of Joseph Dyson, Esquire, Mayor in 1775. Above the arms is the name INTREPID, Mr. Lawrence Norcop’s horse which one in that year. The bowl is whole March London 1774, with Maker's Mark of John king.
Racing enthusiasts will be interested to hear that the same horse won the Grosvenor Gold Cup in the previous year and that this item, a gold beaker shaped cop standing 4.2 inches 10.3 centimetres high and weighing 10 ounces 330 grammes, when auctioned by christies in June 2004 fetched a total, premium included of £117 ,1250.
